MIDI XG Musician has the following features:
- Generates MIDI music based upon General MIDI Level 2 specification, extended with Yamaha XG commands
- Fully compatible with Yamaha PSR 3000 Professional Arranger Workstation. Has general setup for reverberation, chorus, variation (DSP 1) and equalizer. Also has track setup for the first three instrument tracks, for variation (DSP 2,3,4) and equalizer.
- Handles 15 instrument (non-drum) tracks and 10 drum tracks. However, the sound accuracy and quality depend upon the quality of the sound card / MIDI device used.
- Creates and edits scores in a proprietary format, easy to use and with powerful expression
- Has built-in MIDI player which allows to select:
- the MIDI sequencer to use, from those detected on the system
- the synthesizer to use, from those installed on the system
- the track(s) to play
- Smart cursor controls display the current value at the top
- Allows control at song level on: time signature, tempo (tempo can be altered with each note however, see below)
- Allows control at track level on: pan (left-right) and volume (front-back; volume can be altered with each note however, see below)
- For each track is selected the instrument: Bank (MSB, LSB) and Instrument #.
- Navigation from frame to frame inside a track is provided with a cursor which displays the frame number and track length to the current frame
- For each track, it sets the characteristics of each music note named sound frame. For each sound frame it sets the:
- musical note for instrument track, or drum type for drum track
- duration as any combination of 1/1, 1/2, ..., 1/256, and the resulting value can be divided by 3 and/or 5
- tempo variation
- note velocity on (force with which the string is plucked for example)
- note velocity off (force with which the string is released for example)
- modulation wheel
- hold pedal, soft pedal
- expression, variation
- reverberation, chorus
- vibration rate, vibration depth and vibration delay
- harmonic content
- release time, attack time, decay time
- brightness
- 6 graphical super effects to provide fine variation while a note is played,
in two modes (step or linear):
- delta pitch
- delta brightness
- delta variation
- delta harmonic content
- delta expression
- delta pan
- Navigation in one track from one sound frame to another is simple, using a single frame cursor: either dragging its knob or setting the focus on it and then using arrow keys, as well as Page Up, Page Down, Home and End keys
- Editing capabilities are provided. Each sound frame can be edited, having its characteristics altered. Sound frames can be inserted at the current frame cursor position. Entire sections can be cut, copied or pasted at the current frame cursor position of any track in the current song or a newly opened, using block editing functions provided under Tools menu or as toolbar buttons
- Rich transformation capabilities are provided, allowing to change many note characteristics for a selected range.
